I will participate in a symposium organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Kramlich Art Foundation, and the Asia Society. Joining Rebecca Cleman (Director of Electronic Arts Intermix), and Cass Fino-Radin (VP Art & Technology at Canyon), I will take part in a panel moderated by museum leader Jill Sterrett addressing private ownership, public access, and the stewardship of media art.
I will discuss the valuation of time-based media through examples from film, video, and software-based art, addressing issues such as historical significance versus market evidence, editioning structures, and the systemic nature of many contemporary works. Works by Barbara Hammer, Agnieszka Kurant, and Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley will serve as case studies for examining how valuation intersects with conservation, stewardship, and scarcity in media art.
